In a previous post, I introduced you to the music sensation that is TheFatRat, and how the music featured in that post is hosted on soundcloud.com. So if you missed that post, SoundCloud is a website that allows musicians and music producers to host their music so that others can listen to and download their music. It’s a great website if you enjoy remixes of songs or covers, but there are also several popular artists who have SoundCloud accounts that you may not be aware of. In this post, I outline several major recording artists who post music to SoundCloud, as well as some lesser-known artists that are worth checking out. Hopefully you’ll be able to subscribe to these artists’ accounts and hear their new music as soon as they post it. Enjoy
1. Owl City
A personal favorite of mine, electronic singer songwriter Adam Young, under his stage name Owl City, has opened a SoundCloud account. Tomorrow, Adam Young will release a new EP to iTunes featuring four new songs. I was excited when I found out about the release because I enjoy Owl City’s music, but upon further investigation, I discovered that all four tracks had already been published on his SoundCloud account. Hopefully he will continue to post new music to this account so that we, the fans, can hear his music before it is released. So if you are an Owl City fan, check out his SoundCloud account to hear his new EP before it hits iTunes tomorrow. Enjoy.
**Update** 5/14 2:55 p.m. EST Apparently about an hour ago, Adam Young uploaded many more Owl City songs to the SoundCloud account. If you want to hear the new music, you’ll have to do some scrolling now, but now you can enjoy most of Owl City’s music by listening on SoundCloud
2. Regina Spektor
Many of you may not have heard of Regina Spektor, but hopefully that will change after reading further. Regina Spektor is a Russian-born American singer/songwriter. Her music can be classified as folk music, but it has a distinct feel that I haven’t found in any other style of music. Her trademark is her piano playing, which is featured in many of her songs. She currently has released 5 studio albums, with the sixth, What We Saw From the Cheap Seats, due out on May 29th. If her voice sounds familiar, you may have heard her music before without knowing it. Her track, “The Call,” was featured on the soundtrack of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. With her 6th studio album on the way, Regina Spektor has already posted three singles from the new album on her SoundCloud account, so if you’d like a look into her new album, check it out, and if you like her music, be sure to download her other albums.
3. Foster the People
Mark Foster and his band recently jumped onto the pop music scene with their hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” and since then have become one of my favorite bands to listen to. Their sound can only be described as “completely chill,” and if you’ve never heard any of their other tracks, then by all means check out their SoundCloud account. The recent posts are remixes of some tracks, but there are some tracks from their recent album Torches that you can also enjoy.
4. Matt Phillips & the Philharmonic
While you may have heard of Owl City, Regina Spektor, and Foster the People, I’m sure most of you have not heard of Matt Phillips. I actually know him personally, and he can best be classified as a great singer/songwriter, who spends much of his time playing small gigs and of course enjoys playing the guitar and harmonica on the streets of local cities. While he may be a small name now, Matt is currently about to release his EP entitled Bones, which he has posted to his SoundCloud account. So if you’ve never heard of Matt Phillips, I strongly suggest you check out his music and spread the word. He’s a great artist on the rise, and I strongly suggest you subscribe to his sounds. You can also check out his website here.
5. Tristam
Dubstep. It seems to have crept into much of our pop music now, and many people enjoy listening to the strange noise that the genre is. I enjoy dubstep from time to time, and I must say that Tristam is one of my favorite dubstep artists. His dubstep sound is quite different from most, and his SoundCloud account features many remixes as well as original tracks, so if you enjoy listening to new dubstep, be sure to check Tristam’s music out.
6. Skrillex
In other dubstep news, Grammy award winning electronic/dubstep artist Skrillex also has a SoundCloud account. His sounds have become recognizable across the globe, and his recent Grammy wins vaulted his music into the spotlight. If you like any of Skrillex’s music, subscribe to his SoundCloud, which he updated with new sounds 5 days ago, so head on over and check them out.
7. TheFatRat
And of course I couldn’t go a music post without mentioning TheFatRat, who is my favorite artist to frequent on SoundCloud, and rather than posting about him here, you can check out an entire post I wrote dedicated to his great electronic music by clicking here.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to keep up with great artists and hear their new music first by signing up for a free account at SoundCloud.com. I hope that this post will bring you more musical enjoyment, and as always, feel free to comment and share this post, and if you have suggestions for more great music to share, feel free to contact me.
